In October 1979, I boarded USS Richard E. Byrd (DDG-23) with the assigned cryptologic support group supporting first "Northern Wedding", the NATO North Atlantic naval exercise and subsequently BALTOPS-79 in the Baltic Sea. Interesting port visits to Gothenburg and Stockholm.
I was 27 then and a First Class Petty Officer (Cryptologic Technician-Interpretive) with six years' service.
