Still Keeping The Dead Alive
We never really leave so long as we live in the hearts of others - and so long as our effects remain
Our effects remain long after we are gone. That’s one of the main things that Harrowings reminds us on a regular basis. I cannot help but write about those who have gone before.
On my mind at the moment is my dear friend, Elizabeth (Beth) Wylie-Ernst, who died of cancer at the age of 55 and a few days some years ago now. We were graduate students at the University of Pittsburgh and close friends. My wife and I had lunch with her at Ali Baba in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood sometime around the time of the 2012 Carnegie International and we remained in touch virtually thereafter. She fought to stay on this side of the grass with everything she had. As a teacher, she was dedicated to her students and loved what she did. I am so grateful to be a part of her world.
That’s just one of the many who have touched my life and to which I dedicate my work.
After writing:
Life is a Continual Series of Losses
Thrown into time, we emerge from birth and continue to death. On Monday, I learned of the exit from this life of Natasha Guynes. We had discussed having her come on the “Harrowings Podcast” as a guest but we never closed the loop. Now we won’t.
…I felt it particularly important to write again and say something about this. I know that so many of us just move on and I do also, but I also think it’s important to follow Mr. Rogers’ suggestion that we take a moment to think about those who have loved us into being:
Beth and I lived and worked in Mr. Rogers’ literal neighborhood in Pittsburgh. I was there between August 1994 and November 2000 when I moved to Copenhagen, Denmark. “All of us have special ones who have loved us into being.”
Harrowings will continue so long as I have breath in my body. It will keep on doing this - keeping those who we have lost in mind as we move from dawn to dusk and back again. As I repetitively say, we are all brief flashes on the surface of eternity.
Onward, my friends, ever onward…
