We have to be the change - and every cent we spend is a vote

Today, November 6, 2024, I’ve been observing “The Passing Show” as is my habit, my discipline. Production values of the passing show are very basic to non-existent, but it is raw journalism and you get me unvarnished, unrefined—straight, no chaser.

The link to the documentary on Thelonius Monk is no aberration. We need our artists to step up and help us interpret ourselves, our culture, our moment in history. Monk did that - and, at some level, I believe that we are driven by our own daemon to do what we do not just because it is what we are, uniquely, born to do, but because we are not our own masters. We are instruments and we are instrumental in the development of something that transcends our finite selves. We are the universe, the cosmos, distilled into singular (and sometimes—or even often—multiple consciousnesses.

So, what is the point? One of our manifestations is as “homo economicus” - a term I believe I have coined but which I expect is not original to me. That is, we form the world through every cent we decide to spend. The ripple effects of every purchase turn the wheels of the economy. In sum, every cent spent is a vote for the world we are co-creating. So, spend mindfully. Be conscious consumers and realize that if we don’t like the world we are experiencing, we have the responsibility to act to change it.
