Today, I’m reflecting on a 7 mile walk just completed. Most readers of Harrowings will know that it’s been a spell since I was regularly contributing posts here and that has a lot to do with sinking into a ruminant posture mentally and emotionally over the past several months.
As has been happening to more than a few of us, particularly here in the National Capital Region, I lost my employment on a contract supporting the Transportation Security Administration last August 2. Within a month and a half, I determined my way forward would be to found the Harold B Gill Foundation, LLC and use Substack as the primary publishing arm thereof. Nine of you who subscribe are supporting the work and I feel I owe you content, so here’s a bit of it!
The walk today led me to the third sub-level of the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution. Down at the lower level is a three channel video called “Five Murmurations" and I sat and watched it for about a half an hour or so. I was grateful to be able sit with this cultural artifact and soak it in.
Following the walk, I wrote the paragraphs above before getting involved in planning for “DelFest 2025” where I’ll be working with Active Potential to spread the message about the healing power of music up in Cumberland, Maryland this coming Memorial Day Weekend. It’s a four day celebration of the genre of bluegrass music. That was followed by a nap to prepare myself to stay up into Saturday morning after which I walked down the Warner Theater to catch the acoustic performance of Trey Anastasio. This tour is also helping to spread the word about the Divided Sky organization that Trey has founded for helping combat addiction and heal those who suffer from addiction. It was a real treat to run into my vocal coach there. She suggested that I take in the “after party” at “The Loft” at the Hamilton Restaurant which I did, getting home about 1 AM this morning.
I need to do another post about something else later today or tomorrow. So look for that soon!
Thank you all for a being a part of “Harrowings” and please spread the word about its existence. I believe that amplification is the sincerest form of flattery in cyberspace!
Listening now to “Celebration Day” by Led Zeppelin from their “Complete BBC Sessions” - prophetic. As I do so, I am reflecting on the privilege we enjoy which allows us to indulge in such repose while many of us get into action (in many and various ways) to attempt to address what we see as errors and crimes being committed by our government.
Time to get moving….
