Another general post here for all my subscribers for whom I am so grateful!
On Saturday night, I’ll be heading to the Atlantis here in DC to see this young lady perform. She first came to my attention during the pandemic when a livestream called Justice Comes Alive included her playing bass with Marco Benevento:
This was just one of the “silver linings” of the pandemic about which I wrote as I was getting this Substack going:
Lynn and I were so fortunate to be able to survive together here and our hearts went out to all who were suffering. We did what we could with what we had where we were - what more could be asked?
This morning, I woke up early and got a dose of gratitude from Patti Smith.
Patti has been an inspiration for me from the beginning of my association with Substack and I’d like to share this post with all of you this morning.
I think most of you know that my whole existence as a human being is about being a node on a non-hierarchical network and an amplifier of signals of love, compassion, art, music, and literature through the noise of cyberspace. Ever since first getting a little AM transistor radio for Christmas from my parents, Harold B. Gill, Jr. and Margaret Snell Gill when we were living at 108 Dogwood Drive in Williamsburg, I’ve been fascinated with the ability to reach out and connect over distance. Since I got email in 1994 as a graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh and realized that just by typing words into the ether, I could touch another’s mind somewhere, I have been generating what one friend once called “digital exhaust.” It can be exhausting, I’m sure, for some - but I believe enthusiasm for life can be compelling and keep us interested in always pushing onward - regardless of the bumps we encounter on the way.
I’ll be writing a lot more as time allows - and posts of my late father’s works will comprise much of what is offered to the paid subscribers. We cannot give it all away but we can be generous with each other. To that end, please consider supporting this work in any way possible - paid subscriptions are the best way but amplifying by sharing Harrowings will work also.
Remember, we miss 100% of the shots we do not take in life. Be the change you want to see in the world and spend mindfully because every cent spent is a vote for the kind of world we are co-creating on this planet.
Feedback is so appreciated too so:
