History - our ability to know what was known in the past and evaluate it all. Harrowings is an exercise in delving into personal and general history. To that end, I’m writing this on Thanksgiving Day of 2024 - November 28 to be precise. It’s been passed in quiet with a viewing of the Macy’s Day Parade - a tradition here and a couple of phone calls with my recently-widowed mother down in Williamsburg, VA.
This has been a year of transitions - but nothing is constant but change. Still, recording our history as we move from dawn to dusk and back again is an important activity for all of us. It is impossible to understand our present without the context of the past. With that, I’m amplifying Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay on History here. I hope more than a few of you will give it your attention as I have over the past day or two.
There’s the idea that there is a single common mind in which we take part. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
