The Day Dawns and Daily Provisions beckons
Daily Provisions at Q and Connecticut NW here in Washington, DC is the outpost of one of Danny Meyer’s many restaurant projects under the Union Square Hospitality Group. I closed up last night, getting home a little before 11 PM and I’m on the opening crew today, due there no later than 6:30 AM. I’ll wrap up work at 2:30 PM. That’s a good solid 16 hours of work over just about 24 hours. Should be interesting.
I’m really grateful to be able to serve the public this way. It’s good honest, physical work and, with Danny Meyer’s “Enlightened Hospitality” way of doing business, it feels good to be a part of it all. He serves on the boards of Share Our Strength and City Harvest, and is a member of the No Kid Hungry Leadership Council.
Key Philanthropic Initiatives & Focus Areas:
Hunger Relief: Meyer is deeply involved with City Harvest and No Kid Hungry, sponsoring mobile markets and fundraising to fight food insecurity.
Civic Leadership: He co-chaired the Union Square Partnership for five years and created the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party, which benefited the Madison Square Park Conservancy.
Industry Humanitarianism: Meyer was awarded the 2017 Julia Child Award and the 2012 Aspen Institute’s Preston Robert Tisch Award in Civic Leadership for his philanthropic impact.
Crisis Response: During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was a vocal advocate for federal restaurant relief and focused on supporting staff through his “virtuous cycle” of employee-first hospitality.
No Kid Hungry has also been one of the recipients of my charitable contributions over the years, so I feel that choosing to be part of the team at Daily Provisions - Dupont Circle is aligned with my values also. I’m grateful to be able to do this work.
Meanwhile, Harrowings continues. I’m still shooting the “Passing Show” on my way to and from work and I’m open to lining up more “Harrowings Podcasts” with past and future guests. I am a firm believer in amplifying the voices of those who might otherwise not be heard in the cacophony of cyberspace.
We can be the change we want to see in the world and, in so doing, we can be good ancestors. Remember, every cent spent is a vote for the kind of world we are co-creating. We’re all heading to the end of the line, after all:
Well it's all right, riding around in the breeze
Well it's all right, if you live the life you please
Well it's all right, doing the best you can
Well it's all right, as long as you lend a hand
You can sit around and wait for the phone to ring (End of the Line)
Waiting for someone to tell you everything (End of the Line)
Sit around and wonder what tomorrow will bring (End of the Line)
Maybe a diamond ring
Well it's all right, even if they say you're wrong
Well it's all right, sometimes you gotta be strong
Well it's all right, As long as you got somewhere to lay
Well it's all right, everyday is Judgment Day
Maybe somewhere down the road aways (End of the Line)
You'll think of me, wonder where I am these days (End of the Line)
Maybe somewhere down the road when somebody plays (End of the Line)
Purple haze
Well it's all right, even when push comes to shove
Well it's all right, if you got someone to love
Well it's all right, everything'll work out fine
Well it's all right, we're going to the end of the line
Don't have to be ashamed of the car I drive (End of the Line)
I'm just glad to be here, happy to be alive (End of the Line)
It don't matter if you're by my side (End of the Line)
I'm satisfied
Well it's all right, even if you're old and gray
Well it's all right, you still got something to say
Well it's all right, remember to live and let live
Well it's all right, the best you can do is forgive
Well it's all right, riding around in the breeze
Well it's all right, if you live the life you please
Well it's all right, even if the sun don't shine
Well it's all right, we're going to the end of the line
I love how the algorithms serve up just the right pieces of art, music, and literature to illustrate my feelings. I hope that’s it’s helpful to others when I do this. That’s the aim.
The Pleroma has served up another George Harrison number - “What Is Life”:
Per the link to “Laughing Squid”:
In 2016, George Harrison’s widow Olivia and son Dhani held a worldwide contest through Genero.tv to determine what filmmaker would create the music video for Harrison’s 1971 song “What Is Life”.
The winner was Brandon Moore from Oakland, California. This winning music video features Emma Rubinowitz and Esteban Hernandez, both of the San Francisco Ballet, who play a happy go lucky couple dressed in yellow who frolic around the streets and in the woods of the San Francisco Presidio. Per Olivia and Dhani Harrison, this video truly captured the lightheartedness of the song’s lyrics.
Now I’m catapulted back to New Hampshire. It was 1985 when I went on a date with a young woman who was serving us at the Spaulding Inn Club during the Colonial Virginia vs Colonial New England lawn bowling tournament that summer. We played this tune up on Mount Prospect; she on guitar and vocals, me on tin whistles and fife.
Here’s the live version:
Joni Mitchell’s back-up vocals really make this for me. I’m grateful to be able to pass it on to all of you and, with that, I need to change into my uniform for the day. As ever:
Onward!
