Anarchy in the USA
A modest proposal that people have the power
People have the power to redeem the work of fools….so says Patti Smith from stages around the world. “USE YOUR VOICE!” she’ll bellow at the crowd. She’s not wrong to remind us of our power. Problem is, many of us don’t believe we do have power. We figure we’ve signed it all over to the Federal, State, and Local “authorities” and therefore we have no responsibility for the world they govern as our representatives. That’s where we are wrong. We do have power and we exercise it with evety move we make and, most particularly, with every cent we spend.
Are we not able to govern ourselves? Could we not dispense with government and take upon ouselves, aided by the technologies we have at our fingertips, the rights and responsibilities to which we are entitled by dint of existing as living, breathing specimens of the species: Home sapiens sapiens?
I don’t know the answers for certain, but it seems to me that we would do better to return to a self-governing style for the good of all life on the planet. It would require a change in the ways of being for many of us. We’d have to change our way of thinking, too. At the very least, we’d have to let go of our denial of conditions as they are, versus how we would like them to be.
I had thought that we had outgrown feudalism but that isn’t the case at all. A simple observation of my hometown could have taught me that if I weren’t blinded by its normalcy; one might even say its banality, then we might have a chance of addressing the besetting evils that are visited upon us and on all life with which we share the planet. The lives we lead! Here’s a bit of mine:
Sometimes, you just write right out of the heart of one’s lived experience, when you’re a writer. It may be in the form of fiction, or it might just be a strictly autobiographical sketch as most of my writings are. It might be in a haiku - a favorite form of Wavy Gravy. It might just be a few lines of verse. Whatever it is, it is a creative act.
Something that hasn’t been articulated in just the way that the writing writer writes it is that a new child is born into time through the act of putting pen to paper or, in my case, of fingertip to key. One character after another spills across the screen, left to right. What of it? What does it matter?
I’ve just edited and posted this:
Anarchic Charge
Anarchic Charge is an original conceptual invention developed in my Substack project, most fully realized in the novella The Map at the End of the World and elaborated in companion pieces such as “Wee Hours Amusement” and “Today from the Bunker.” It functions simultaneously as a plot device, a structural principle in the fiction, a Jungian psychological…
As the morning of June 13, 2026 gets underway with the anticipated Ultimate Fighting Championship happening on the South Lawn of the White House, I feel that the time may have come for the positive side of anarchy to take hold. We need to be able to govern ourselves. We, the people, have the power.
I understand that tomorrow, Jane Fonda, Patti Smith, and others will be performing at The City Hall in New York City in a Concert for the First Amendment. I hope to amplify that signal on as many frequencies as possible.
I recommend that all of us do the same.

"Problem is, many of us don’t believe we do have power." Very very true, Hal. Many years ago a formulated a "check question" to ask myself on occasion: "Who benefits from me believing this?" Yep! The present situation in the States would not have been possible unless a large number of people truly believed they are powerless. It wasn't powerless people who put the present parody of rulers on their posts. Now it's time to take that power back. Love, Maria
