I was on the pier at Kingsmill Marina on Friday evening just after sunset and made the acquaintance of Joel Levine who is a very interesting professor at the College of William and Mary. The world expands when we simply get our hands extended. I told him abit about my endeavors and he told me something of his. We two, standing on that pier at just after 8 PM, got a treat in standing there watching a comet which probably last was here about 110 million years ago and which might get ejected from the solar system by this pass or come back around more within 235000 years. The wikipedia article didn’t really clear that up for me.
Orbital period ≈ 110 million years (inbound)[2]
≈ 235,000 years (outbound)[2]
In any event, we two, standing there were conscious witnesses to this one in our species’ lifetime opportunity to regard this object as it passed near to our little planet.
On this day of rest, I hope we will all pause and consider, in the enormity of eternity, how fortunate we are to be here now and to have the opportunity to collaborate and cooperate with each other in such a way that we can contribute to our collective culture. With that thought in mind, I wish you all the best for the coming week.
